ARLINGTON, Va. — August 27, 2026 — The Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA) mourns the passing of Colonel (Ret.) John M. Mitchell, former Chairman of the AMBA Board of Directors, longtime Board member, and dedicated advocate for military banking.
John served as Chairman of the AMBA Board from 2010 to 2012, following years of service on the Board of Directors. Throughout his tenure, he helped advance AMBA’s mission of supporting financial institutions serving America’s military community and worked to strengthen collaboration among member institutions and industry partners.
A retired U.S. Army Colonel, John devoted his life to service. Following his military career, he continued that commitment in banking as a senior executive with Columbus Bank & Trust, a division of Synovus Bank, where he supported military banking operations and the financial needs of service members, veterans, and their families.
John also represented AMBA on the Armed Forces Financial Network (AFFN) Board of Directors, where he served for a time as Board Chairman, helping strengthen one of the military banking community’s most important partnerships.
Those who served with John remember a leader who was generous with his time, eager to mentor others, and deeply committed to the success of the Association. AMBA Services Inc. (ASI) Board member Mike Greer recalled that when he joined the AMBA family, John became part of his “unofficial sponsor team,” helping welcome and encourage new leaders.
John’s colleagues also remember the character he brought to every interaction. As former AMBA Chairman Michael League simply observed, “A true gentleman and a pleasure to be with.” Phil Edwards, reflecting on his years working with John at Synovus and later through AMBA, remembered him as “a fantastic man” whom he “deeply respected.”
As those who knew him have become aware of John’s passing in the last several days, former Board members and colleagues shared a common message. They remembered him as a true gentleman, a trusted leader, and a mentor who welcomed new volunteers and generously shared his knowledge and experience. His professionalism, humility, and unwavering commitment to serving others earned the respect of those who worked alongside him, while his warmth, friendship, and genuine interest in people made a lasting impression throughout the military banking community.
John’s family recognized his service to AMBA as an important part of his life’s work, reflecting the pride he took in supporting the Association and the military banking community. His contributions remain part of AMBA’s history and the strong foundation upon which the Association continues to build.
